State Employees Applaud Applaud Enhanced Survivor Benefits for Families of State Employees Killed in the Line of Duty

[Hartford, CT] -  In 2024, the tragic line-of-duty deaths of a state trooper and a DOT road construction worker highlighted critical gaps in the state employee retirement system’s pre-retirement death benefits. The newly reached agreement ensures that, moving forward, spouses and minor dependents of employees killed in the line of duty will receive periodic retirement payments, alongside an increase in lump-sum cash benefits to reflect inflation. Additionally, a separate agreement improves the process for correction officers seeking disability retirement benefits due to injuries from job-specific hazards, transitioning decision-making to the Retirement Commission for more expertise and fairness. Both agreements reflect a commitment to supporting workers and their families under the most extraordinary circumstances.

Connecticut Employees Union Independent Local 511 President Carl R. Chisem, who lost a member last year in the line of duty, stated, "With the swift passage of this legislation, Connecticut has taken a monumental step toward honoring the sacrifices of those who dedicate their lives to public service. On behalf of our members and the families who rely on these critical benefits, we thank you for standing with us and for acting decisively to protect those who protect and serve the public."
